Seymour Police Department 2016
As in all changes involving added duties, any K-9 Officer will tell you that becoming a K-9 Officer is a life changing experience.  What they will later tell you is that it becomes a way-of-life.  The Seymour Police Department currently employs 1  officer and his K-9   Ace. Seymour K-9 officer not only work with their K-9 partners on-duty, but they also take them home until it's time to go to work again.  The officer/handler is responsible for providing the K-9 with proper living conditions, and proper care.  The K-9 Officer/Handler performs these duties without monetary compensation.  This is just accepted within this position and shows the dedication inherent within our K-9 Officers/Handlers. K-9 Ace is a highly trained tool for the department.  They are both members of and certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA).  Yearly certifications are conducted by a master trainer in narcotics detection, obedience, aggression control, and tracking.  The unit also attends a monthly maintenance training to keep the K-9 current with its certifications.  K-9 units have successfully completed and maintained their certification requirements since the inception of the current program in 2004. As was mentioned before, being a K-9 Officer is an added duty.  The officer/handlers are first and foremost officers.  They respond to complaints, and conduct normal assigned duties as any normal patrol officer would.  But, since they are equipped with the K-9 tool, they have the extra duties of utilizing that tool when requested or required.
